Fort Rouge School, River Avenue at Main Street was the oldest school in use in Winnipeg when it was replaced by a new modern structure located behind it. This school (seen in photo) was built in 1891 by John S. Gervin at a cost of $10, 800. Although the original oil lamps and drinking water buckets were modernized, the "Rube Goldberg" type of plumbing and the cord wood burning twin furnaces served until the end. This school was demolished following a reunion of teachers and pupils in March 1954. Sign on building reads "Fort Rouge Public School 1891". The Union Jack Flag flies above its roof. |
